The picture galleries do not fulfil their potential as one of the main draws of the Museum. Improved environmental conditions, with more works on display, will realise that potential as one of the most stunning suites of picture galleries in the country. The recent roof repairs above this space now ensure that the galleries are watertight, but there is internal water damage to repair and the skylights need refurbishing.

The picture galleries will be rehung in a very bold and impressive style to display as much of the collection as possible in a visually appealing way. The hang will be dense and will reflect early display styles in the Museum, as evidenced in historic photographs.

The size of works in these galleries and the number on display will enhance the sense of space, height and grandeur reflected in the architecture. With improved environmental controls, better lighting, hanging systems, seating, interpretation and décor the picture galleries will offer an inspirational and uplifting experience.
