Press Releases > County Durham Open Art Competition: Exhibition Attracts Chinese Artists
Durham County Council’s (DCC) annual Open Art Exhibition, which this year is being staged in The Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, has attracted two artists from China.
This is the fifth year that DCC has staged the open art exhibition, which over the years has grown from strength to strength. The exhibition is now an established annual event that the council has provided to give local artists a platform and opportunity to showcase their work.
This year Annie Liu and Jiangiang Bai are exhibiting their work alongside local artists. They learned of the exhibition as Annie currently lives in Durham and is studying for an MA in graphic design at Northumbria University.
Annie completed a degree in industrial design at the University of Beijing, before leaving China to be with her partner Jie Wang, who is a Physics lecturer at Durham University.
Jiangiang Bai completed his degree in fine art and is now a professional artist and teaches art at Beijing University. He has had many solo exhibitions of his work throughout China but this will be the first time he has exhibited outside of his home country.
David Newell, Arts Coordinator for the council said, “The Open Art Exhibition has been a huge success across County Durham and the wider region. This is mainly due to the support of local artists and the wealth of creativity within our region. The quality and standard of work has improved year on year and we are delighted to be exhibiting in The Bowes Museum this year”.
Vivien Vallack, Head of Exhibitions at the Museum, said “We’re so pleased to be hosting the 2013 Open Art Exhibition and look forward to displaying what I’m sure will be a colourful, vibrant and varied selection of works, on all kinds of subjects. There is such a lot of artistic talent in County Durham it will be a pleasure to showcase it to our visitors”.
The exhibition runs from 2nd March – 7th April. For further information visit www.thebowesmuseum.org.uk
