This exhibition brings together the works of Julian Opie with that of his personal collection of works of art from the ancient world and 17th and 18th century British Portraiture. Such a juxtaposition is revealing in many ways, in particular in throwing light on the inspiration for Opie’s practise as an artist, but also in revealing the complexity within the nature of portraiture; what it means, how it is done and how it has changed throughout the history of art. Julian Opie has had many exhibitions around the world in the last 30 years, and now for the first time we have an opportunity to see his work within the context of his collection which offers a fascinating insight into his work and his collecting instinct.
