Temple Lamp, Indian, c.1867

This brass temple lamp was made for the Indian section of the 1867 Paris Exhibition where Museum founders John and Joséphine Bowes bought it for 400 Francs.

This type of Hindu temple lamp is known as a Vriksha-deepa, or tree lamp, because of the tree like branches that stem from the main pedestal.

It would be lit on special occasions.
