#DidYouKnow: Master of St. Gudule

6 Jun 2018

  • John and Joséphine purchased the Passion Altarpiece from a sale of their furniture supplier, Monbro, in Paris in 1859;
  • In our archive, we have the original Monbro Fils sales catalogue, featuring the Flemish altarpiece, along with the viewing card and bill;
  • There are only seventeen works by the Master of the View of Saint Gudule in Britain, of which twelve are here within this piece.
  • The artist, known only as the Master of the View of Saint Gudule, was so-called because of his most famous work, now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, which shows the Cathedral of Saint Gudule in the background;
  • On the reverse of the oak carvings are three mallet marks, the hallmark of the Brussels Sculptors’ Guild
  • During the Art Happens campaign we raised £21,163 in 60 days to conserve and re-display the 15th century altarpiece;
  • There were 196 backers;
  • Our altarpiece is a rare example of both original oak carving and paintings remaining as one piece.
