Half Term Fun

22 February – 2 March

This half term, dive into a fantastic programme of free activities included within admission, inspired by the museum, parkland and its wonderful collection.

Enjoy daily self-guided art and craft activities in the Create Space, explore the parkland with Nature Spotters and join the Spotlight Tours for a brief introduction to the collection. Special events include Family Story Tours, Artist Makers workshops, Seed Bomb workshops, still life and brooch making workshops. There’s something for everyone, with all activities included with entry and free for members. Children under 18 and full-time students go free.

Spotlight Tour

A friendly and informative introduction to an exhibition, the collection or building. Led by The Bowes Museum’s team of Visitor Attendants, Curators and Volunteer Tour Guides, join us for an informal 30-minute tour, everyday at 11:00, and 2:30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to find out more.

Artist Makers

Make time for making; join in and get creative. An opportunity to try out new techniques, materials and experiment with the Museum’s team of artists, makers and designers in the Create Space. Additional Artist Maker sessions are held 1.00 – 3.00 on Wednesdays during the school holidays. Drop-in sessions, included in membership and day admission.

Stay and Play

Time for The Bowes’ youngest visitors to explore and play in the Conversation Gallery, investigate materials and be creative in this self-led, free-play session. Suitable for children up to 5 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Seed Bombs

Join this engaging, hands-on workshop where you’ll create your own pollinator-friendly seed bomb using native seeds to take home with you. Discover the vital role wildflowers play in supporting pollinators and boosting local biodiversity, while contributing to a greener, sustainable environment. Nature Spotters

Gather with us in an outdoor-inspired campsite in the Conversation Gallery. Discover the fascinating world of wildlife in the parkland, delve into the natural wonders that influenced some of the museum’s treasures and play games inspired by the great outdoors. Artist Makers: Garland of Tales

Join artist Jane Young to create a hanging garland using colourful papers and twine, inspired by a winter scene from the museum’s collection, The Fable of the Fox and the Crow (1873).    Drop-in activity in the Create Space, recommended for ages 8+.

Artist Makers: Tiny Treasures

Join artist Jane Young in the Create Space this February half term, where you’ll create your own unique mouse using vibrant papers and shimmering gold foil, inspired by the dainty Gold Mouse automaton – a cherished gift from Joséphine Bowes to her husband John. Drop-in activity in the Create Space, recommended for ages 8+.

Brooch Making Workshop

In this workshop with Take a Stitch 2 Durham you will create a brooch inspired by Vivienne Westwood’s use of tartan and feathers, although the design is easily customisable to other patterns/embellishment.
