My interest in The Bowes Museum began following a visit to the Winter Market in December 2023. Due to inclement weather on this particular day, the outside stalls were moved inside. I was amazed at how beautiful and interesting the museum was and whilst I thoroughly enjoyed the Winter Market, I found myself browsing the art exhibitions that were open for viewing. I then became a Friend of the Museum and continued to visit throughout 2024 until I applied and was successful in becoming a volunteer Events Steward for the 2024 Winter Market.
I thoroughly enjoyed working at the Winter Market and was given the role of meeting and greeting visitors to the museum. I met some lovely people and tried to help them navigate their way through the museum. Visitors were so impressed that they could look around the museum collections whilst visiting the Winter Market.
I was then asked if I would consider the role of Activator in the newer section of the museum Create, Conversation and Curiosity. I was appointed a buddy, Hana, an experienced volunteer to work with for my first few sessions. Hana was excellent and I learned a lot from her about my new role and the museum. The role of Activator in this section of the museum involves engaging with visitors, encouraging them to explore, use the materials and become involved in creating a piece of art if they wish. I also assist the local artists set up for their workshop in the Create gallery which is usually well attended by children and adults.
My latest role was that of Volunteer Steward at the Nerina Pallot concert in March 2025 and what a fabulous night that was. It was held in the Jubilee room and approximately 90 guests were entertained by a wonderful singer and musician. Welcoming guests who were amazed at the beautiful setting for the concert was an absolute privilege I will always remember.
For me there are many benefits of working at The Bowes Museum. Driving through the gates of the museum gives me a wonderful feeling to know how lucky I am to work in this beautiful place. Once inside I am greeted by the friendliest people who I work with and can rely on them for help if needed. I receive regular contact, support and guidance from the Co-Production Volunteer Manager who always makes me feel valued for the work I do. Being a volunteer is a fulfilling and fascinating experience.
I always look forward to working at the museum and I can’t wait to see what other volunteer roles become available in the coming months.
