ACCESS FOR ALL

At The Bowes Museum, the team are dedicated to ensuring that all visitors can enjoy their experience by offering a range of accessible facilities and services to make their day as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Facilities and Services

Parking and Entry: Dedicated accessible parking spaces are available directly behind the building. There is an accessible entrance on the east side of the Museum (to the left-hand side once you’re behind the building). By pressing the buzzer, an intercom system will connect you to the friendly Welcome team who can assist you into the building.

Toilets: Accessible toilets are located on the ground and first floors (inside the Women’s and Men’s toilet blocks on the 1st floor).

Mobility: A lift and stairs provide access to all floors inside the Museum and there are wheelchairs and portable folding gallery stools available to use free of charge. Please contact us in advance if you would like to borrow a wheelchair as numbers are limited. All floors have level access.

Guidance and Support: Standard and large print orientation maps are available on request at Reception and large print menus are available in Café Bowes. Specialist tours can be organised in advance to enhance your visit, depending on availability. Guide and assistance dogs are warmly welcomed inside the Museum and a water bowl can be provided.

Audio induction loops are fitted at the reception desk and at the till in the Museum’s shop and Café Bowes. Portable loops are available on all three floors of the Museum and can be used for activities and events on request.
