Val Scully is a writer, researcher, and a Friend of the Bowes. She has published books and historical novels, such as A People’s History of Gibside, My Name is Eleanor and Molly Bowes. Her talk will recount the rich and varied stories of six strong women whose lives span 300 years of the Bowes family history and whose legacies are woven into the fabric of The Bowes Museum. Among them were Lady Elizabeth Bowes (John Bowes’ great-great grandmother), a pickaxe-wielding firebrand who fought to build the family’s fortune in coal, and Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, who championed The Bowes Museum, was a patron of the Friends and saved the Gibside estate for the nation. Her talk at the Museum is sure to be a fascinating and stimulating one.
