We’re pulling out all the stops for this years Heritage Open Day and opening up behind the scenes to visitors, showing you rooms and stores that aren’t normally on show. Drop into the Jubilee Room throughout the day to listen to our guest speakers, ranging from artists and curators to directors and opportunities to get involved with The Bowes Museum.

Join Sue Fielder to discover significant areas of interest in the Bowes parklands. Inspect the sundial to find out about the late Queen Mother’s story, Founders’ tombs, see the war memorials, fountain (former band stand) and site of intended chapel including the lime tree walk. Visit the The vault store, which currently houses furniture recently relocated from a gallery on the first floor which had been used as a store for the last fifteen years. The Glass Cube

The Camera Obscura
Location: on the Parterre
From the Latin words for dark room or dark chamber, has an aperture through which light travels, creating images of outside objects which are projected live onto a viewing surface. The artist Canaletto used this method to create the beautiful paintings that are on display in the painting galleries. The Camera Obscura will be situated outside for the duration of the day for you to visit.
Bright Woods Forest Schools
Location: Fountain
Join artists Gemma and Louise from Bright Woods Forest School outside to build your own floating creations and try them out in the fountain. Inspired by nature, we’ll use natural materials in this fun and splashy activity.
Parkland Play
Location: Gravel Drive in front of Museum
Borrow hula hoops, balls and bats to play in the parkland. Try out some of the ideas from the Play Park Play Book available free from reception.
Pots and Pots Talking Table
Location: 2nd Floor Ceramics Gallery
Meet the education team and learn about the uses of pots through history, Bronze Age Beakers, Greek Amphora and Tudor Pipkins with a few more surprises along the way.
