In Conversation with Emma Goldsmith: How French Couture Travelled North

The story of Fenwick begins in Yorkshire with John James Fenwick, born in 1846. Trained as a tailor, his talent and drive soon take him to Newcastle, where he opens his own shop on Northumberland Street. From these humble beginnings grows a department store empire that changes fashion retail in the North East, London and beyond.

A true pioneer, Fenwick introduces French couture to Britain, bringing Parisian style to Newcastle long before luxury fashion is widely available outside London. Today, the business remains proudly family-owned, a lasting symbol of innovation, craftsmanship and ambition.

Join us for this in conversation with Emma Goldsmith to hear how Fenwick’s story unfolds and why his legacy still matters today. This event is part of the Joséphine : A Woman of Taste and Fashion exhibition programme.
