Come witness the mesmerizing performance of ‘The Slowest Wave’ performed by the talented Vangeline of New York Butoh Institute at The Bowes Museum. Vangeline, Director of the New York Butoh Institute, is a highly skilled Butoh dancer based in New York City. Butoh is a unique and expressive dance style that began in Japan in the 1950s. Vangeline created a solo piece called ‘The Slowest Wave’, which is not just a performance but also a part of a scientific study. This study, the first of its kind, looked at what happens in the brain when people perform Butoh.
‘The Slowest Wave’ was developed in 2022 with the help of neuroscientists and combines influences from various art forms, such as surrealism, mime, ballet, and even literature. The dance delves deep into themes of stillness, femininity, and female sensuality, drawing inspiration from the Delta brain wave, the slowest type of brain wave associated with deep sleep and meditation. The performance is a blend of art and science, exploring how our brains and bodies connect through movement.
Get ready to be captivated by the unique blend of dance and theatre in this one-of-a-kind performance.
