Thornton Hall was built around 1550 (although there is no authentic account in the various histories of the exact date) by Ralph Tailboise and is one of the oldest buildings in the Borough of Darlington, one of only 7 to be awarded the Grade 1 listing. When you visit the gardens you’ll find fabulous flowers, secretive areas with quirky and unusual benches, seats, statuary, and sculptures. Enjoy a tour of the gardens and view the exterior of the hall which does pose a lot of architectural questions before sitting down to a delicious afternoon tea.
